What is a “COOL ROOF”?

What is a Cool Roof? Can I get a Cool Roof? What does a cool roof do and how does it benefit me?

Well, a cool roof is one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a normal standard roof. Cool roofs are made of a highly reflective paint, or by highly reflective tiles or shingles.

Most roofs in the world are dark-colored, and just like wearing dark colored clothing, it can get really hot. On the surface of a roof, temperatures can rise up to 190 °F .This increase in temperature can contribute to:

  • Increased cooling energy use and higher utility bills
  • Reduced indoor comfort
  • Increased air pollution due to the intensification of the “heat island effect”
2019 will see more large and small companies making use of affordable integrated software solutions.

A cool roof can benefit a building by:

  • Reducing energy bills by decreasing air conditioning needs
  • Improving indoor comfort for spaces that are not air conditioned
  • Increment roof service life.
  • Reduce power plant emissions, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, and mercury, by reducing cooling energy use in buildings.

IS A COOL ROOF EXPENSIVE?

A cool roof does not always have to cost more than a non-cool roof. However, converting a standard roof that’s in good condition into a cool roof can be expensive. Major roof costs include upfront installation (material and labor) and maintenance.

DO I QUALIFY FOR A COOL ROOF?

Most buildings do qualify for a cool roof. What differs is your cities climate. Different locations across the country provide rebates for installing cool roofs. Contact your local roofing company for further detail about installing a cool roof.
